Dual-Camera 3D Finger Pointing Recognition for Intuitive Device Control

Background:

Current touchless interaction systems depend on expensive depth sensors, wearable hardware, or controlled environments that limit real-world deployment. Many solutions require users to wear colored gloves or use costly depth-aware cameras. Conventional hand detection methods can lose accuracy beyond approximately 15° of rotation, constraining practical deployment. A more robust, low-cost, camera-based solution is needed to improve pointing precision and usability across human-computer interaction, robotics, and advanced control environments.

 

Technology Overview:

This invention introduces a novel system for 3D hand pointing estimation using two standard orthogonal-view cameras. The system first detects the hand region using an orientation-invariant method in which the hand image is warped from Cartesian to polar coordinates using the wrist as the zero-degree reference. A cascade detector built with AdaBoost and binary pattern features identifies the hand region, while an Active Appearance Model (AAM) is applied to both views to capture single contours. The system combines simple hardware, polar warping, binary-pattern detection, and dual-view AAM tracking to achieve robust, sub-5° accurate, long-range 3D pointing without intrusive equipment.

• Improves robustness to hand rotation up to ±60°, significantly beyond traditional ~15° limitations
• Combines 14-point feature tracking with dual-view 3D reconstruction for improved pointing precision
